2012 will see a variety of events on offer encouraging visitors and Scots alike to get active and enjoy Scotland's great outdoors.

From the adrenaline charged Mountain Bike World Cup in Fort William in May to awe-inspiring Highland Games across the country from May to September there's something for everyone.

Discover Scotland's heritage and celebrate the 800-year-old tradition of the Common Ridings (when townsfolk would ride the boundaries to protect their lands) in 11 of Scotland's Border towns from June to August. Explore the beauty of this region further and enjoy ten days of superb mountain biking in the Tweed Valley at TweedLove from May to June.

Grab your hiking boots and get out and discover Scotland's breathtaking mountain scenery on one of this year's walking festivals. Discover the dramatic and rugged beauty of the western Highlands at the Torridon Walking Festival or why not get off the beaten track and discover the surprisingly wild landscape of Dumfries & Galloway at the Newton Stewart Walking Festival? Uncover the astonishingly mountainous landscape of the Angus Glens at the Angus Glens Walking Festival.

Celebrate the Year of Creative Scotland 2012 and combine running with performance art at the spectacular Speed of Light event in Edinburgh where you can participate yourself and be part of a mass of visual art on the extinct volcanic rock of Arthur's Seat.
Get in the mood for the Olympics at the Scottish leg of the Olympic Torch Relay in June or head along to the Scottish routes of the Tour of Britain, the UK's biggest professional cycle race in September.
